Evaluation & Treatment of Abnormal Vaginal Bleeding Q&A

What is considered abnormal vaginal bleeding?

Normal menstrual periods typically last about five to seven days, resulting a predictable flow from start to finish, and usually occur about every 28 days. Bleeding that is significantly outside those ranges – including spotting between periods, prolonged periods, missed periods and extremely heavy bleeding – qualifies as abnormal vaginal bleeding and requires an evaluation by your doctor.

What causes abnormal vaginal bleeding?

Abnormal bleeding can be caused by many factors. Some of the most common include:

  • puberty and menopause

  • endometriosis, a condition that occurs when cells that are normally found inside the uterus begin to grow outside the uterus

  • tumors, polyps, fibroids or cysts

  • adhesions (scar tissue)

  • polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)

  • IUD use

  • a change in birth control methods

  • severe or chronic stress

  • significant changes in weight

  • excessive physical activity and exercise

  • breastfeeding

  • thyroid disease

How are abnormal periods treated?

Before any treatment is implemented, Dr. Louis-Jacques will perform a comprehensive exam and evaluation to determine the underlying cause of your bleeding so she can prescribe the best type of treatment. Treatment options include:

  • changing your birth control method, including removal of an IUD

  • hormonal treatments for women with PCOS and other conditions

  • ablation to treat menorrhagia, a condition that causes heavy bleeding and occurs in menopausal women

  • surgery to remove fibroids or adhesions or to treat endometriosis

  • lifestyle changes such as losing weight

Dr. Louis-Jacques is skilled in identifying the causes of abnormal bleeding, using a wide array of techniques to determine potential issues, including internal exams using advanced techniques like hysteroscopy or colposcopy to evaluate your uterus and cervix, lab work and diagnostic imaging including ultrasound and CT scans.
