Family planning involves choosing a type of birth control that helps women and their partners avoid pregnancy until they decide it's right for their lives.
Dr. Louis-Jacques is experienced in helping women choose from many different types of birth control, including:
birth control pills
If you choose an IUD or a diaphragm, both IUD insertion and diaphragm fittings can be performed right in the office so you can return to your normal routine right away.
When choosing a type of birth control, the most important consideration is how likely you are to use it. Some women may be afraid they'll forget to take a birth control pill every day, so they may opt for birth control options like an IUD or arm implant that doesn't require daily “maintenance” to remain effective. Some women prefer to use birth control only when they need it; for them, a diaphragm could be a good option. Diaphragms do involve insertion prior to sex, and you must leave them in place for several hours after sex, which may be inconvenient for some women. Likewise, different types of birth control may have different risk profiles. The best way to decide which type is right for you is to discuss all your options with Dr. Louis-Jacques so she can help you weigh the relative benefits of each.
Depending on where you are in your cycle, you can become pregnant as soon as you stop taking your birth control pills. Some women prefer to wait for a full cycle to pass before attempting to conceive.
