A laparoscopic hysterectomy is a minimally invasive approach to hysterectomy, the complete or partial removal of the uterus. The laparoscopic technique may be performed through one or several small incisions in the belly or the vagina. The approach depends on several factors, and Dr. Louis-Jacques will discuss your options following your evaluation. Whichever approach is used, the hysterectomy is performed using a laparoscope, a special instrument designed to be used through small openings such as the vagina or small incisions. The laparoscope has a camera that enables Dr. Louis-Jacques to see the uterus on a computer monitor instead of through a large incision.
Healing is much faster with a laparoscopic approach because it uses very small incisions or no incision at all. The risk of infection is also significantly decreased, and scarring is minimized. However, open or “traditional” approaches may be necessary in some cases, such as when cancer is present.
Today, there are several alternatives to hysterectomy depending on the symptoms and condition you're experiencing. Some possible options include:
myomectomy, a minimally-invasive procedure to remove uterine fibroids
uterine artery embolization, which cuts off the flow of blood to fibroids
endometrial ablation, a technique that removes the lining of the uterus to treat heavy bleeding
dilation and curettage to treat heavy bleeding, especially during menopause
in-office laparoscopic procedures to treat endometriosis and adhesions (scars)
in-office procedures using a flexible instrument called a hysteroscope to treat issues affecting the fallopian tubes or uterus
In some conditions, medications may also be used to relieve symptoms without the need for a hysterectomy.
