Tubal ligation is a procedure that severs and seals off your fallopian tubes, the tubes that allow the egg to descend from the ovary into the uterus. By closing off the fallopian tubes, eggs are prevented from entering the uterus and becoming fertilized. During tubal ligation, the ends of the fallopian tubes may be sutured closed, cauterized (sealed by heat) or clamped shut using specially designed clamps.
During the procedure, you'll be sedated so you can sleep. Several small incisions will be made through your belly so Dr. Louis-Jacques can access your fallopian tubes. The area will be gently inflated with gas to provide the doctor with a clear view. Next, an instrument called a laparoscope will be inserted through the incision. The laparoscope is designed to magnify the area and project images to a computer monitor for viewing. Special instruments designed to work through small incisions will be used to perform the ligation. The incisions will be closed, and you'll be able to return home the same day after a spending a few hours in recovery.
Essure is a type of permanent birth control that uses tiny coils inserted into the fallopian tubes to prevent pregnancy. Once inside the fallopian tubes, these coils cause scar tissue to develop, blocking the tubes and preventing sperm from reaching and fertilizing the eggs. Essure coils are inserted in a simple, in-office procedure using an instrument called a hysteroscope to see inside your fallopian tubes and ensure coil placement is correct. It takes about three months for scar tissue to form once the coils are in place, which means an alternate form of birth control will need to be used during that time. Essure does not protect against sexually-transmitted infections.
